Analytical Quick Tip

Know the chemical stability of your standard. Chemical stability can be altered by changes in starting materials and preparation conditions. It is therefore advisable to perform stability studies on all standard solutions to avoid time-consuming and costly delays or mistakes. It is equally important to strictly adhere to preparation methodology, including order of addition for multi-component standard solutions.

Quick-guide to Quartzware Cleaning

The use of 1:1 nitric acid or 1:1 nitric/ hydrochloric acid is commonly use for removing inorganic impurities that may be left on the quartz ware from prior use. In some cases the use of dilute HF is necessary to strip the surface of silica and impurities. The use of HF is only used in extreme situations where other reagents have proven ineffective.

When quartz has been exposed to organic impurities, it may be cleaned by immersion into a freshly prepared solution of 1:1 sulfuric and 30% hydrogen peroxide. The solution is very hot and exposure to the skin will cause severe burns, so extreme caution is necessary. Only a very experienced analyst should prepare and use this solution. Allow the quartz to sit overnight in the solution under a hood.

Another way to rid the quartz of organics that are not organometallic in nature is to heat it in a muffle furnace at 550 °C overnight.

Nitric acid will attack organics when concentrated and heated under pressure, but it will not convert them to CO2 and water.

Q: Why do chemists enjoy working with ammonia?

A: Because it's pretty basic stuff.

Analytical Periodic Table

Storage & Handling:  Keep tightly sealed when not in use. Store and use at 20 ± 4°C. Do not pipet from container. Do not return portions removed for pipetting to container.

Chemical Compatibility:  Soluble in HCl, HNO3, and H2SO4. Avoid neutral media. Stable with most metals and inorganic anions. The fluoride is insoluble in water but soluble in HF.

Stability:  2-100 ppb levels stable for months in 1% HNO3 / LDPE container. 1-10,000 ppm solutions chemically stable for years in 2-5% HNO3 / LDPE container.

Ga Containing Samples (Preparation & Solution):  Metal (is best dissolved in HCl / HNO3); Ga2O3 (Na2CO3 fusion in Pt0); Ores (carbonate fusion in Pt0 followed by HCl dissolution); Organic Matrices (sulfuric / peroxide digestion or nitric / sulfuric / perchloric acid decomposition or dry ash and dissolution in dilute HCl).
