Hazardous Shipping Guide

By Christopher Gaines, Marketing Director  •  Edited by Brian Brolin

It is unfortunate, although not without merit, that 95% of our products have been deemed hazardous by the Department of Transportation (DOT). This leaves the chemical industry paying significant shipping charges in respect to an inexpensive (but highly technical) consumable product. [ Penalties for ignoring DOT regulations ]

An understanding of how these charges and regulations work will enable you to do a little planning, saving you money and frustration.

What makes it Hazardous?

The most common hazardous products we carry contain Nitric acid, Hydrofluoric acid, Hydrochloric acid, and Sulfuric acid. Even products with trace amounts of these acids are considered hazardous.

If a product contains ≥ 0.1% Hydrofluoric acid, it must be placed in a separate box and container that the DOT has termed a poison pack. Poison packs consists of our product wrapped in a packing cloth and placed in a special container. The container is then put in an inner-box which is, in turn, placed into a plastic bag. Finally, the packaged material goes into the shipping box. Two 125mL bottles, one 250mL bottle, or one 500mL bottle can fit into a single poison pack container. A limit of one liter of poison-packed material can ship by air. There is no limit for ground shipping.

What's considered Non-Hazardous?

Typically, all anion stock chromatography standards are non-hazardous. A few of our cation stock chromatography standards are non-hazardous as well. Most of the Quality Control standards that we carry are also considered non-hazardous.

Our Online Catalog includes a hazardous notice with every product we sell. This notice will clearly state whether the product contains hazardous materials.

UPS Hazmat Fees

UPS Ground -- UPS charges a hazardous fee of $20.00 per box for ground shipments. Only SIX liters can be sent in each box.

UPS Air -- UPS Air shipments have a $30.00 per box fee. This includes UPS One Day Red, Two Day Blue, or Three Day Orange services. Only FIVE liters can be sent in each box.

Average UPS Shipping Cost Per Box

Method Hazmat Fee Shipping Cost Total
UPS Ground $20.00 $7.00  $27.00*
UPS Orange - 3 day $30.00 $17.00  $47.00*
UPS Blue - 2 day $30.00 $27.00  $57.00*
UPS Red - 1 day $30.00 $37.00  $67.00*
*Estimated totals will vary based on location and weight by ±$5.00

How long in transit?

UPS guarantees their expedited Red, Blue, and Orange services. If the package does not meet the required one, two, or three day transit, they will reimburse you for the shipping fees, but NOT the hazardous fees, which is unfortunately most of your cost.

UPS ground shipments are given an estimated arrival time. See the map below.

Customers with UPS Accounts

If you have an account number with UPS, the hazardous fees are charged to Inorganic Ventures. Therefore, our company adds the hazardous fees to your invoice as a line item.
